Castle Bank, Cefnllys
Situated in our grounds of 92 acres is the site of the Norman Cefnllys Castle which occupies a position of strength and beauty at the top of Castle Bank.

The Castle, also known as 'Clastell Glan Ithon', was built by Roger Mortimer, and played its part in border skirmishes between the Welsh and English. This castle was destroyed during fighting in 1262 and replaced with
Cefnllys Church
a more substantial one at the South West tip of the hill which survived until the late 1400s when the Manorial Court was transferred to the Neuadd.

The castle was supported by the small town of Cefnllys, built at the base of the hill. When the castle became a ruin, the town gradually disappeared and now only the 13th Century church remains.

Places of interest

Mid Wales is an unspoilt area of lowland valleys and rugged uplands, with small market towns and villages. The pace of life here is more relaxed then elsewhere in the UK. You'll be glad to find that we don't have traffic jams, and you'll enjoy visiting the local towns with their interesting independent shops, where service still counts.

A few minutes' drive from Neuadd Farm is Llandrindod Wells, a Victorian Spa town with a picturesque lake, now the county town of Powys.

Caban Coch dam, Elan Valley
Builth Wells, a few miles south of Llandrindod Wells, is set in the Wye Valley and is home to the annual Royal Welsh Show.

Rhayader is the gateway to the Elan Valley, with its dramatic scenery and impressive dams and reservoirs. This is excellent walking - and mountain biking - country, and a great place to see red kites in their natural habitat.

Activities

Walking - direct from our door, over our land up Castle Bank to the site of Cefnllys Castle, along the nature trail by the River Ithon or over the surrounding hills. Nearby Radnor Forest and the Elan Valley are good walking country.

Golf - there are four golf courses within a radius of 15 miles.

Horse riding and pony trekking are available nearby, for the novice and experienced rider.

Fishing - on our own land in the River Ithon, day and weekly permits are available for other waters nearby.

Wildlife - there is a badger set in our grounds, otters in the river, buzzards flying overhead and red kites only a few miles away.

Castlemilk Moorit sheep
On the farm you will meet our Castlemilk Moorit sheep. This rare breed was developed by crossing various primitive breeds and the wild Mouflon in Dumfriesshire in the early 1900s. This hardy and quite prolific breed are all descended from a group of just 10 ewes and two rams which were the only survivors of the original flock, in 1970.
